| | | | | Beer Mugs and Steins |  The obvious relationship between beer steins and beer brewers naturally leads to brewery beer mugs. While beer-making implements can be found as decorations on steins made in the 1600s and 1700s, the motifs of specific brewers were generally used until the late 1800s.
Brewery mugs can be found for many German and American breweries and occasionally for those from other countries. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, large quantities of brewery steins were produced as promotional tools for the breweries. Due to World War 1 and economic conditions of the period, few brewery steins were made between 1914 and the early 1920s. German brewery mug production rebounded from the late 1920s into the 1930s but ceased with the start of World War II.
The 1960s saw the start of the production of the modern German brewery steins, followed in the 1970s by the resurgence of American brewery steins. The growth of interest in collecting American brewery steins has been phenomenal, and particular designs frequently number in excess of 100,000 for some breweries.
Beer mugs are generally pottery or stoneware, and most designs are transfer decorations.
